I recently had my head shots updated with the incredible Elisenda Llinares Photography. I had them taken a few years ago and was not happy with them because I did not like my outfit – mostly, it was unflattering and I did not feel fabulous in it. This time, rather than try to figure it out on my own, I sought the council of my friend Fern who owns the wonderful Lilac Bijoux boutique in Annapolis. In addition to getting help with my outfit, I had someone else do my make-up. Having your make-up done professionally can go a long way. I don’t wear that much make-up on a daily basis but Valerie Hammer Makeup Artistry did an amazing job making my make-up look natural and it photographed great.
As we age, we realize we can’t wear what we used. Our bodies change, our tastes may change, and what we once thought was “our style” suddenly seems “out of style.” When people come to me for head shots, the number one question I get is: “What should I wear?” I tell everyone the same thing: “Wear something that makes you feel good. Wear something you love.” For me, this cream blazer with gold stitching on the inside (you can see on the cuff) was a great, versatile piece. The navy tank underneath was a great staple piece I knew I could wear a lot. I always think layered looks feel more put together than just one piece. And it tends to look a little more interesting. Add some of your favorite jeans and low-heeled nude pumps and you’re good to go.
Accessories are as important as your clothes and can either add to or detract from your outfit. The wrong piece of jewelry – too big, too busy, too bright – can just become a distraction. I chose a meaningful piece for me – my mom’s pearls and diamond broach – and took some pictures with and without it. Simple diamond studs are always a great choice.
When you’re ready for your close-up, feel free to ask me about your outfit. You can send me pictures of outfit choices and I”ll help you decide. Keep it simple, keep it you. Oh, and have alternate outfits to mix it up if you have time!
